Do You Have Hidden Sugar Anywhere in Your Diet?

Posted on 2/28/2019 by Dr. Leary
Do You Have Hidden Sugar Anywhere in Your Diet? While most people do not need to cut sugar completely out of their diets, it is something that should be limited. Processed sugar can lead to extra pounds and other health problems.

Sugar coats your teeth and can cause several different dental problems. You may think that you are doing a good job of avoiding sugar, but are you? Many people consume more sugar than they should, and they have no idea.

Healthy Sounding Foods
A major source of foods that are filled with hidden sugar sound like they should be healthy. Granola bars and fruit snacks sound like they would be good for you, but many of them are packed with sugar. Yogurt, condiments, and snacks such as canned fruit also sound like they are healthy, but they might be higher in sugar than you expect.

Fruit and Fruit Juices

Fruit juice is another place where hidden sugar can lurk. This might not be cane sugar, but it will still have the same effects on your teeth and body. Fruit can be a better alternative to fruit juice but be warned that fruit is also full of sugar. The sweeter it is, the higher the sugar content.

Reading Labels
If you want to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, read food labels. You will want to first check the ingredients list, but not all sugar is obvious. You can see the amount of sugar in an item by checking the Nutrition Facts on the back of the package.

Another way to control the amount of sugar that you consume is to prepare your own foods. If you would like to know which foods to eat and which you should avoid, we would love to share that information with you. Cutting back on sugar will lead to better oral health, and better health overall.
