How to Care for Dental Veneers on a Daily Basis

How to Care for Dental Veneers on a Daily BasisFrom a young age, people are taught how to care for their teeth. From how to brush their teeth, to how long and often to brush your teeth, the lessons learned at an early age about the care of your teeth, play a role in how healthy they are.

If you need veneers for some reason, you will want to learn how to care for them in the same way you did when you were younger. Some of the things are familiar while others are going to require learning something new.

Think About the Reason for Veneers

When you want to know how to care for your veneers, you need to think about the reason for the veneers. People get veneers to correct a problem with their natural teeth. The veneers can cover up broken, cracked, chipped or discolored teeth. Something happened to the natural teeth that made you want to get veneers to improve your oral health. If you do the same things that led to the veneers again, you can end up in the same situation as before.

The Do's and Don'ts
The basics of taking care of your veneers on a daily basis starts with the same basics of caring for your natural teeth. All good oral hygiene habits include brushing twice a day and flossing daily. It can also include an antimicrobial mouthwash along with regular visits to our office for checkups and cleaning.

If a person suffers from bruxism, teeth grinding or if they engage in sporting activities, they may want to use a mouthguard to protect both their teeth and the veneers. It is also a good idea to inspect the veneers every day to spot any potential problems or changes.

Along with the things you do on a daily basis, there are some things to avoid. Excessive use of alcohol can damage the veneers. Smoking is also bad for your veneers. Chewing on ice or other hard objects puts the veneers and the natural teeth at risk for a variety of problems.

Essentially, your veneers are not much different from your natural teeth. The better you care for them every day, the longer they will last and the better they will look.
